History of Sandy’s MusicGirls, by Jim Robertson

After the passing of his wife, Sandy, in March 2014, Steve “Sticky” Morrison shared his vision of Sandy’s MusicGirls with my wife, Melanie, and me. He wanted to honor Sandy’s memory by helping young girls discover the joys of music. He specifically wanted to take a group of girls to a Florida folk music camp. I suggested the Sunshine State Music Camp in the Pinellas County area. Steve followed through and sponsored several girls to attend the camp. At the end of that camp, Steve asked Melanie and me if we knew of any other camps he could sponsor girls to attend. I found myself saying “Steve, Let’s start our own camp for girls!” In my work over the years as a high school administrator, college administrator and owner of a business that promoted educational events, I felt confident I could help our friend realize his vision and fulfill a vision that we shared.

The first MusicGirls Camp was held in 2015 and hosted 19 girls. It was one eight-hour day and was in our eyes a smashing success! Camp 2016 served about 30 girls for an evening and a full day and was also a great experience for the girls attending. Camp 2017 expanded to two full days and served 48 girls. Since then, we have expanded to two camps; junior camp of three half days for girls 6-9 and senior camp for five full days for girls 10-19. We host about 25 Junior MusicGirls and 50 Senior MusicGirls each year. We recruit only women instructors who are both good musicians, passionate teachers and good role models, Through MusicGirls Camps and other activities we are inspiring girls to become the best women they can be.
